Sara Sellmer and Madeleine Scott had a rewarding trip to Woodside Horse Park this early October. Sara competed at her premiere CIC** competition for both TF Kreisler (Brad) and Sloan McQuick (Femika). Sara commented: "Femika was brave and fast over the cross country course, her dressage improved hugely, and just touched one rail stadium. Brad was handsome and classy in dressage, clean and careful showjumping, and skipped around his first CIC ** like it was a pretraining track!" They had a fabulous time. Dressage went well and not a foot wrong in the stadium jumping according to Maddy. Cross country started out better than ever; strong, confident, and exciting! An unfortunate stumble on landing going into the water complex caused them to take a bit of an unplanned swim.
Both Sara and Maddy are looking forward to Galway Downs International Event to complete this years competition schedule on October 29th to November 1st in Temecula, California. Sara competed with TF Kreisler (Brad) and Sloan McQuick (Femika) in the Open Intermediate. Brad's performance was strong and stable resulting in a third place finish. Due to an unfortunate trip in the first water jump of the cross country course, Femika received a mandatory retirement. Both horse and rider recovered quickly. For a video clip of the Intermediate and Advanced Division, visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMck8EaRrLQ&app=desktop Sara and Femika are at the 1:10 minute mark. Madeleine finished in 8th with Maxima (owned by Malia Orr) in the Jr./YR Open Preliminary. Maddi found Max to be relaxed and settled in the dressage ring and lovely in the stadium jumping; however she experienced a jump refusal on the cross country course. Overall, Maddi was pleased with the outcome and and remarked "you can never be too aware out on the course. There is always something that catches you quicker than you think." This year at Campbell Valley Horse Trials, Lanzelot made a big impact! We had 18 horses from Lanzelot Stables compete, and we also hosted the young riders BBQ on Saturday night. Thanks to Mike Martin, Terry Drake, Don Fraser, Kevin Smith, Mick Adamanski & Mark Poppleton for their mad bbq'ing skills and the many others involved in the prep for feeding 150+ people.
This was the first time event for many: three of our youngest riders (Austine, Taylor and Grace), Aysia Patjas and as well as three of our ladies, Ramona Ludwar, Lauren Hall and Ashley Sudds - Congratulations ladies!! Our working student Madeline Scott had a double clear round in cross country and showjumping in prelim and earned herself a 3rd place finish on Maxcima (Max). Sara Sellmer competed three of her training horses; Midnight Tango II (Tango) and Rambo, both in pre- training, and Triple Sec (Rowan) in the training division who she ended on a dressage score and came in first place! Mia Poppleton riding Life of Reilly (Reilly), came in 4th in entry and was also awarded the prestigious Canadian Eventing Cross Country Style Award. This award recognizes competitors who demonstrate exemplary cross country technique and educates riders and coaches as to what constitutes safe riding cross country. All in all a very successful weekend for Lanzelot Stables! This year at 'The Event' at Rebecca Farms in Kalispell Montana, Lanzelot represented very well! This event showcases all levels from pre-training to CCI***.
Sara Sellmer brought her two competing horses TF Kreisler (Brad) and Sloan McQuick (Femika) and competed at the intermediate level, finishing 7th on Brad & 5th on Femika. Madeleine Scott, our working student, brought Maxcima (Max) owned by Malia Orr and competed at the preliminary level finishing with a honourable 3rd place, and Allisa Taylor brought home a 6th place ribbon with her horse Good Times (Winston) at training level. This event has become a huge part of Lanzelot every summer, and many of its riders and their families come to watch and support the barn! We missed Tj Drake, Sara's groom, this year due to scheduling conflicts but Mia Poppleton filled in with Natasha Williams to keep Sara's horses well looked after and happy. Already looking forward to 2016! To view Madeleine Scott on Maxcima JR/YR Preliminary Show Jumping visit: http://www.rideonvideo.net/watch.php?vid=910e6d2e7 We are delighted to announce that Sara Sellmer has been selected to be the Chef D'equipe of the BC and Alberta Young Riders team at the 2015 North American Junior and Young Rider Championships! Sara says "it is an honor to be asked to do this and it is such a great group of young riders to work with. And the best part is it is held at the Rolex Kentucky park!"
The Young Riders are Tosca Holmes-Smith, Shelby Brost and Renee Kalkman with Head Coach Nick Holmes-Smith. As Chef D'equipe (team manager) Sara will be part of the Young Riders team going to the Adequan/FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships on July 14-19th . It is the premier equestrian competition in North America for junior and young riders age 14-21 and often produces riders who go on to be Olympians. Young equestrians vie for team and individual FEI medals in eventing and other equestrian sports. You can learn more at www.youngriders.org The state owned Kentucky Horse Park is THE place for things "horse" - there is an Equine Theme Park, the Secretariat Centre for thoroughbred adoption, museums, camping and, of course, the Rolex 3-Day Event course - one of only six Events in the world that are ranked at the CCI**** level. Maybe Sara will be walking the course and dreaming of competing there.... Congratulations to Madeleine Scott on her sucess with Maxcima and Mini Cooper at Topline Show Park Horse Trials this past weekend! Way to go!
It was another fantastic weekend for Lanzelot Stables in Yelm, WA at Aspen Horse Trials. We had two competitors from Lanzelot make the 18hr round trip, Sara Sellmer and Madeleine Scott. Sara placed 1st and 4th in the Open Intermediate Division. Following excerpt and photo reposted from Eventing Nation "Sara Sellmer from Kamloops, British Columbia, made a strong statement in Open Intermediate, taking first with TF Kreisler on 34.4 and fourth with Sloan McQuick on 46.3. Though Aspen Farms was the first attempt at Intermediate for both horses, they both finished on their dressage scores under Sara’s guidance. She had nothing but positive things to say about how the horses performed, especially TF Kreisler, also known as Brad. “Brad’s a really good mover,” Sara said. “He’s rideable in dressage; the judges tend to like him. His jumping has come leaps and bounds. Honestly Brad’s strongest trait is that he’s got a heart like no other. He’s an extremely trustworthy, solid citizen.” " Maddy went down with her horse Mini Cooper and Maxcima, owned by Malia Orr Radymski. This is her first season showing Maxcima, who performed really well and earned them a 12th place finish in the Prelim Division. Maddy said "Aspen was a great learning experience for both my horses and I. The course was difficult, yet not unreasonable for prelim level. The atmosphere is beyond anything you can witness at the BC events. My results weren't exactly what I was hoping for, but we came out of it looking forward to great things in the future."
www.equinecanada.ca Ottawa, Ont., May 19, 2015 – Sara Sellmer of Kamloops, B.C. pulled off a remarkable feat close to home at the Mustang Powder Horse Trials, held May 16-19 in Chase, B.C. In the CCI 1* division, Sellmer proved unbeatable, riding two mounts to the top of the standings to take first and second place. Sellmer’s win came aboard her 10-year-old Canadian Warmblood mare, Sloan McQuick (Florian x Formatt). After scoring 57.3 penalty points in the dressage phase, the duo ended the first day in fourth place. However, they rose to the top of the leaderboard after being the only pair of the day to pull off a faultless cross-country round over course designer and event organizer, Nick Holmes-Smith’s 4,200 metre course, which featured two water complexes. Zero jumping and just four time penalties in the final show jumping phase allowed them to hold onto their lead with a final score of 61.3 penalties. Her second place finish was earned with TF Kreisler, her 11-year-old Irish Warmblood gelding, sired by Menuhin. A dressage score of 51.0 penalties started them off in third place. They moved up to second place after putting in a cross-country performance that saw no jumping, but 17.6 time penalties. Four jumping and two time faults in show jumping kept them in second place overall on a total score of 74.6. “I could not have asked for more from my two horses,” said Sellmer. “I found the cross-country to be challenging, but fair, with its varied terrain. It’s always a pleasure to attend this top class event.” Rounding out the top three placings was Jessica Kerschbaumer of Blackfalds, Alta. and her 14-year-old Thoroughbred mare, Hard Sun (Ciano Cat x Sunny Halo). Their performance was highlighted by a cross-country round that incurred no jumping penalties. Just two rails came down for eight show jumping faults, bringing their final score to 81.5 penalties. Holmes-Smith’s daughter, Tosca, emerged the winner of the CIC 1* division. Partnered with her mother, Ali Holmes-Smith’s 20-year-old Welsh cross gelding, Paddington, she was the only rider to complete all three phases, and finished on a total score of 103.0 penalties. About 8 months of planning, 3 changes of departure/arrival time, money for memberships, travelling expenses and entry fees, thousands of long hard hours of training all winter and we finally arrived at Galaway Downs in Temecula California. It took 3 full days of travelling, 3 states, 3 maps, around 6 bags of beef jerky and about 37 hours. We traveled through all sorts of country and saw incredible things, torrential downpours from our neighbours in Langley, a friendly boarder crossing that had our fearless leader run back through the pouring rain not once, but twice to make sure all our paperwork was in order. We saw endless miles of rolling green hills, fields of orchards, gridlock 4 lane freeway traffic to desert lands, some unsanitary rest stops and way too many windmills, overpasses and high rise bridges for Sara's comfort zone. Being locked up in the trailer for that long...both horse and rider were all getting a bit stir crazy so a cross country school at an overnight stop in Fresno made everyone excited for our last leg of the trip! We arrived at Galaway in Temecula around dusk, got the horses settled, and we were done!!! After a last minute entry Sara was able to get both a dressage lesson and a jump lesson with our Canadian Eventing Team Coach, Clayton Fredricks. Sara and Sloan McQuick worked on getting more trot, straightness and a longer neck in dressage. Jumping-a piece of cake for Femika-they worked on some canter poles, flying changes and Sara sitting a bit straighter. After a few days at Galaway for schooling, a shower for ourselves and lots of preparation. Dressage day arrived! Sara had an early ride time and her test proved to be accurate, quiet and relaxed-landing her with scores in the middle of the pack. Not too shabby for us Canadian girls! Saturday is the exciting cross country phase-lets face it-it's why we all event! The start time for Sara was in the heat of the day! The course proved to be smooth with just the right amount of "questions" for the division! Femika sailed through with no time, moving them up in the placings. She left the finish hungry for more and cooled out well. It takes us grooms hours to get everyone settled after cross country. The horses always come first so after bathing, whirly boots, ice, poultice, wraps, feed, and a fresh bed of shavings we cleaned up tack, the mess, ourselves...dinner for us comes around 8:30 if we are lucky! Show Jump! Another early start for us and another day of braiding!!! That means we are in the running a for ribbon! Femika loves the show jump fences and hates to touch them so a clear round in time moves them up again! A 3rd place finish at our first event of the year sets us up for a great season ahead! What an exciting way to start our 2015 year! As fun as it's been we are all anxious to get home to Lanzelot, sleep in our own beds, see our families and put the suitcase away...until the next one! Finding balance in our work, in our personal life and in ourselves is valuable but it resonates in the literal meaning while riding. It could mean finishing a clear round or finishing on your rear end - balance. On March 16/17th , 12 riders joined together for a two-day clinic from our guest instructor, Maeve Drew. The pre-season clinic refreshed the students on five fundamental points; they are applicable across disciplines be it in a dressage test, cross country course or stadium round. Our job is to prepare the horse to do their job. Maeve stressed that we can get away with losing one of the five points, but two or more and we make it a lot harder for the horse to jump the fence. When this happens, we need to know how to ride an imperfect approach, correct it and then move on to the next fence. The five points are:
Quotes overheard at the clinic:
Ashley Sudds said, "My horse and I really enjoyed ourselves riding in Maeve's clinic. She had five simple steps to remember and was very encouraging! I wouldn't hesitate to participate in another one of her clinic's in the future." Thank you to Maeve Drew!! Maeve is an Equine Canada Level One Coach and competes at the preliminary level with her lovely mare "Capriola" . She was born in Ireland, immigrated to Canada when she was two and currently resides on her farm in the Cowichan Valley with her husband. Maeve loves her job competing and teaching 6 yrs old to 70+ years students.
