On April 25 & 26 Rubia & I went to Aspen Farms for a Lucinda Green clinic. Lucinda is a British equestrian who was World Champion, two time European Champion and an Olympic Silver medalist. Now a selector for British teams, she is passionate about helping riders understand the way that horses think and react while tackling the challenge of the cross country course. She is a highly sough after clinician and one of my idols.
On the first day we did a bunch of technical lines with skinnies and different shapes - check out the video (https://www.facebook.com/ZEventing.ca/videos/777168979124892/) to see just how skinny! We worked on control and letting the horse "find " the fences. Lots of alternating between galloping fences, then coming back to tough lines. On the second day we did cross country jumps in he arena because of the rain. With Lucinda's urging - I learned how to gallop again! I was told to " stop stuffing around and get on with it" and "To ride galloping fences, slow down, accelerate and then coil the springs". A very helpful inspiring weekend! I'm coming home with lots of homework for myself and new ideas for coaching. And again, I am so grateful to Amy Click to be riding Tomlong Rubia this year.
2017 Eventing Schedule Find it all right here: http://www.lanzeloteventingstables.ca/uploads/1/7/3/0/17306354/2017-calendar-events-zeventing.pdf ZEventing Clothing Everyone needs some ZEventing swag - so Ashley Sudds is making it happen. There are jackets, shirts, an apron and baseball caps. Order forms due by Feb 20th. Based on quantities ordered, the prices will change slightly. Payment is due by Feb 27th. The logo patches are for sewing onto our own saddle pads. The Horse Barn can sew them on for us, Ashley might collect a pile of people's (labelled) pads to take to the Horse Barn for them to sew the patches on. HTBC Clinics and Young Riders Registration for the Spring Clinics is now open at horsetrialsbc.com - the Johvale Spring Clinic with coaches Sandra Donnelly, Dana Cook, Leohona Rowland, Maeve Drew, Brandy Saunders, Sara Sellmer and Sarah Bradley is one you don't want miss! It is on April 21-24 and there is also a Young Riders Social & Education Session. Speaking of Young Riders... Young Riders is a program for all Horse Trial BC members 21 years of age and under. Please join this great group for exciting opportunities, support and encouragement! Young Riders initiatives run throughout the year! It DOES NOT MATTER at which level you compete, you are eligible to be part of the program. It cost $20 to join the program. Which is well worth it considering you can apply for a $100 subsidy to attend one of the HTBC Spring Clinics. Forms for both are at: http://www.horsetrialsbc.com/index.php/young-riders/young-rider-forms New Name HCBC MembershipYou need to renew your Horse Council of BC membership - everyone riding with Sara or at Copper Hills needs to be a current member. And while your at it, you might as well renew your Horse Trials BC membership (you can do it in the HCBC renewal steps).

Aspen Farm Horse Trials was a total success for the small team of Z Eventing riders participating. Sara Sellmer, with head groom TJ Drake, and apprentice coach Madeleine Scott made the drive to Yelm, Washington to compete on 4 horses.
Sara and TF Kreisel (Brad) entered into the “Adequan USEA Advanced Level Gold Cup”. Sara also rode Triple Sec in the “Tin Men Supply Area VII Open Preliminary Championship” and Midnight Tango II in Open Preliminary. Madeleine was riding Eleanor Go Brightly in her debut at the Training Level. All four partnerships had successful events! Triple Sec was foot perfect in her jumping phases and ended up in 9th place. Midnight Tango II ran his first Prelim event and was a total star in all phases - finishing in 5th place after a double clear cross country round. This was Eleanor Go Brightly first Training event – with Madeleine in the saddle, they improved their standings with each passing phase and the pair looked polished and are a very promising partnership. The highlight was Brad’s great event and 2nd place finish. They started off on the right foot - tying for 2nd place with a 30.7 in dressage (even after Brad did some extra flying changes that weren't required). But people really started to notice when they came galloping in over the cross country finish line 20 seconds to spare and lots of horse left. They were the fastest time over the course – “Brad was fantastic. He was hunting all the jumps. I knew by fence 3 he was on, and then I just enjoyed it and let him do his thing. He got a bit long to the water, but he is so quick and honest it worked out.” They finished in 2nd place overall by .3 points! Lots of press coverage was a bonus, people were watching: http://www.useventing.com/news/mary-burke-secures-lead-adequan-usea-gold-cup-advanced-aspen-farms http://useventing.com/news/burke-secures-repeat-adequan-usea-gold-cup-advanced-win-aspen-farms Of course – it only ran so smoothly for everyone because of TJ's amazing work!
The past two weekends have had Z-Eventing on the road - first to the Mrs T Memorial Horse Trials at Maple Ridge Equestrian Centre (MREC). Only a small crew went down - and 3 of the participants were in it for their first ever horse trials. Dr. Jennifer Jackson (who also happens to be our veternarian) went down on her new horse For Pleasure (Ari Gold) who was previously Sara Sellmer's Intermediate mount. And Sara brought down two new horses: Rivendell and Freesala. Veteran team Mia and Life of Reilly also made the trip. From Jennifer: Dreams do come true! And last weekend, Maple Ridge Equestrian Centre provided the background for one of the most amazing weekends of my life. Somewhere among the chaos of being a soccer/ski mom and busy veterinarian I had forgotten I could have so much fun! This was my first horse trials ever and first equine competition in a very long time. Fortunately Ari Gold is an experienced and amazing horse; Sara Sellmer is a very generous and enthusiastic coach; TJ Drake is undeniably the most supportive person and Sally and Mia were so helpful getting me through my first show, and recording my first cross country course. Every minute of the weekend was fun. From riding at twilight on Friday to picking up my ribbon on Sunday. I can't say enough about how great our Lanzelot team is and how valuable it was for me to invest in this adventure. And then there was The Event at Rebecca Farms... This past weekend saw Sara and TJ went down to Montana with three horses and no less than four additional Z-eventing team members who made the trip to support, watch and have fun - but not ride. "The Event" at Rebecca Farms is beautiful, fun masterpiece of an event - every successful trip to Rebecca Farms is a dream come true.
Sara was riding three horses and finished in the ribbons on all three. TF Kriesler (Brad) was 2nd after dressage and cross country, he had two rails stadium and finished 7th. Triple Sec (Rowan) was 12th after dressage, moved up to 7th after a double clear cross country round and finished 4th with another double clear in show jumping and Midnight Tango II was 8th after dressage and finished 6th after clear rounds cross country and show jumping. We are so excited for our future with these amazing horses - there is no shortage of equine talent at Z-Eventing!! The courses were beautiful, having the team there was great and party was fun! We can't wait for next year. The Topline Stables Back to Back Horse Trials was a fantastic weekend for the Z-Eventing team of horses and riders. The weather was good and the courses were challenging but fair. The courses and the whole weekend flowed very well - we even got out on the lake on Saturday night between events - what a treat! All the students rode like champs and the horses were super. Thank you to King and Sonya and all the volunteers for a great event - we love Topline!! In the ribbons....
