Big Crew to Campbell Valley Horse Trials

8/17/2016

Comments

Campbell Valley Horse Trials has always been a favorite event for Lanzelot Stables.  The great facility brings lots of family and friends down to Langley to cheer on our riders (and a chance for our boys to continue their ongoing crib tournament).   Another young tradition is that our Lanzelot boys organize and cook the Young Riders fundraiser BBQ on Sat night. Thanks a million to our guys - it was delicious, fun and the proceeds go to a worthy cause!

The 3 day format should add a bit of simplicity to our large crew knowing that everyone does the same discipline each day. However we brought 18 horses (Sara rode 6 of them) and had to dedicate an entire horse trailer for feed - that made the weekend a little more complicated!

With so many bodies around it can all get a little chaotic. There are lots of horses, people, tack and grooming supplies moving around and being shared, however, everyone always  pitches in and helps each other out. Everything from adding 1/4 marks and our Z logo to the horses to borrowing a crop so you don't have to make another trip back to the  trailers. No one stops until all the work is done and all horses and riders are taken care of.

Our crew started the event off with Sara and Brad performing the Advanced Combined Test and we finished the show with Taylor Drake on Maddy Jade and Austine Adamski on Mini Cooper getting 1st and 2nd in the Starter division!

With that much support it was no question that all our horses and riders looked and performed like champions!  Our numbers and results demonstrate how hard we all work year round to be a successful team.  See you all next year for sure.

Highlights from Mustang Powder Horse Trials

Lanzelot Eventing riders arrived in a convoy of 8 horse trailers on Thursday afternoon - the large crew had riders in every division.  It was a wet, muddy weekend - it rained, and rained some more, then just when we packed up to leave - it rained again.  Most of the paddocks had tents strapped to them and every tack up included a game-time decision of whether or not to screw in studs.

Performance highlights:

  • Kendall and Ridley showed a sign of things to come from this new pair with amazing dressage performances and 2nd place overall in Combined score
  • Mia rocked all the jumping courses – with no jumping or time faults all weekend and finished 6th in both events
  • Sara and Tango went beautifully in the first event and finished in 2nd place
  • Zoe was happy for the second go round and finished in 8th place with only their dressage score in the second event
  • Emmy was burned by Nick’s old-school technical flags in the 1st go-round – but did a great job on Strella for a 3rd place finish in the second event.  Her second horse trials ever.
  • Stanley showed his true colours as an impeccable athlete – he and Savannah won both events and Combined score in the Entry class.  What a great way for Savannah to finish her first complete horse trials.
  • Ari Gold was the consummate gentleman and took Jayne around for a successful weekend with 4th and 2nd place finishes

The Holmes-Smiths and Rowans were excellent hosts – with socials and campfires and a beautifully run event.  There were constantly fixing the footing on the cross-country course to keep it safe and the free wine and beer (and someone brought ‘schnapps’ too) helped keep us all warm.  It was a fantastic start to the 2016 show season!

Season opener - Lanzelot Clinic

3/8/2016

The weather couldn't have been nicer this weekend for our 1st official event at Lanzelot - what a beautiful weekend.  Sara conducted her 1st clinic of the season on March 5th and 6th before she heads back down to California next week with Brad for the CIC*** at Galway Downs.

Since we have returned she has been working non stop with both training horses and riders to share everything she has learned along her travels and get us up to snuff for the quickly approaching show season.

This clinic showed off how well we had paid attention in our regular lessons.  Lessons were split up into groups and were a whopping 1.5 hrs long. Great on day 1!  Day 2 both horse and rider felt the burn.  No pain no gain, right :)

Day 1 started with flat work, focusing on straightness, lateral work and square turns. We proceeded with the dreaded canter poles, and a short, small jump course. It is amazing how you can feel like a champion cruising along the rail of the arena and have it all fall apart over a few poles on the ground.  Reality can be so cruel.

Day 2 was a quick review on our previous days efforts and then head up to the big arena for a change of scenery.  With the beautiful weather and newly positioned bleachers for our peanut gallery it certainly felt like spring. The jump course was fairly straightforward the fences however were all at a related distance....my personal fear.  A test of how much our hard work during the flatwork pays off.

Of course it pays off - every single rider got through the course successfully. All of us now have specific things to work on while she is down in California. The beauty of horses - you can never know enough.  That's one of the reasons why we ride...to always get better.

A huge thanks as always to Lanzelot Stables and all those who keep it going and looking so beautiful.  A huge thanks to our incredibly dedicated coach who works tirelessly to keep us all motivated, learning and feeling our best.  And to the family's of our Lanzelot riders....so supportive of us all the time.

Love my barn family!
